Our mission is to empower communities and change lives through programs that advance education, workforce readiness, leadership development, and economic opportunity. We equip individuals with the merit to achieve, the drive for excellence, and the vision for innovation necessary to grow as leaders, achieve personal and professional goals, and make lasting contributions to their communities.

Our Vision

To ensure that the Urban League of Northwest Indiana becomes the premiere agency that supports and promotes neighborhood community collaborations towards the improvement, capacity building, and awareness of citizens in areas of education, financial literacy, health/wellness, and civic/civil leadership, throughout Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties; which would encourage a better quality of life.

Our History

The Urban League of Gary was founded in 1945 as an Affiliate of the National Urban League.

On June 25, 1945 the Urban League of Gary was born with the commitment to strive for equal opportunities for all citizens.

In December 1970, the Board of Directors voted to reorganize as the Urban League of Northwest Indiana, Inc., to better reflect the service community of the Lake Area United Way – thereby serving Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties.

From eighth grade to graduation and beyond, we provide viable programs and opportunities for students to experience post-secondary success.

Our Staff and Volunteers are steadfast in offering support services to improve the quality of life for Northwest Indiana citizens.
